"Playfully ominous" Australian Stage Ashes to Ashes

~

"Small theatre at its best!" SF Bay Guardian Master Harold...

Second Wind presents Wanton Darkness April 16 through May 8th! Vampires, war criminals, and the darkness within each of us: two mind-bending tales from Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter and Olivier-winner Conor McPherson.

"Story-telling as striptease." ~ The NY Times (St. Nicholas)

"The most influential and imitated dramatist of his generation." NY Times ( Ashes to Ashes)

In Ashes to Ashes, a seemingly casual conversation unearths a wife’s sadistic affair, embarking on a mysterious and sinister journey into the past. Devlin is trying to get to the bottom of his wife’s possible infidelity. Her lover— past? present?— is a violent, powerful man who’s hold on Rebecca goes deep into her psyche. So deep that it connects with a shared memory of the Holocaust. As Devlin drills down into Rebecca’s memory, struggling to separate illusion from reality, he begins to become the monster she fell in love with." Pinter writes with disturbing power, corrosive humor, and unnerving silences," writes Steve Winn of the San Francisco Chronicle.

In St. Nicholas, a Dublin theatre critic chases an actress to London and falls in with a band of vampires in this irresistible tour-de-force about hope, obsession, love, and the monster within. The vitriolic thespian of has made a career out of destroying others—- that is until a seductive actress draws him out of the shell of his own creation into the familiar hell of unattainable infatuation. After he quits his job and follows her to London, he falls into the company of vampires with the perfect job for him: visiting pubs late at night and engaging the interest of good looking young people...." Rich, descriptive, and salty," says The Saint Louis Riverfront Times.

Second Wind believes theatre is a vehicle for getting people fired up and engaged in issues that are important to them. We embrace the tradition of theater as an instrument of both education and catharsis. Charles Brousse of the Marin Independent writes: "Second Wind has a goal that is rare in today bottom-line driven theatre world: to use the stage to explore social and political issues that impact ordinary Americans lives." And now you can become a part of the process!
